Introducing the Cohort Model!

We are excited to announce that the Ed.D Program Office and the Doctoral Support Center will be working more closely with one another to serve you. The Doctoral Support Center will now follow the same cohort model of service currently provided by the Ed.D. Program Office.

Each cohort is now working directly with a writing advisor who has been paired with your academic advisor. This writing advisor will be ready to work with you on reviewing your papers and dissertation chapters. Presentations and workshops will continue to be led by the team of experts at the DSC. The writing advisors dedicated to each cohort are:

The cohort structure will work as follows:

• 2009, 2006, and 2003: Linda Fischer will coordinate with Nadine Singh
• 2008, 2005, and Legacy: Ilda Jimenez y West will coordinate with Jessica Gibson
• 2007 and 2004: Gokce Gokalp will coordinate with Rocke Demark

We believe that this team approach will enable our advisors to best prepare for the needs of students at each stage of the program. We look forward to your feedback!

Today! Preparing for Your Quals Defense

Don't forget!  Presentation TODAY!  Thursday, May 27 at 3-4 pm in WPH 408.

The summer heat has arrived.  But as those of you getting ready for your qualifying exams know, now's not the time to take a break.  Instead, start thinking about your Qualifying Exam defense.

We can help you understand what you're going to be asked about, demystify the process by allowing you to experience a mock defense.  All of these, along with assisting you to prepare a strong proposal, will make you feel more confident and have a better defense. 

All Education students are welcome, however this will be of special interest to students planning on taking their Qualifying Examination in 2010-2011.

What's ODA?

ODA stands for "Operation Dissertation Acceleration"  It is an all-inclusive residential writing retreat. ODA is designed for doctoral students who need / want to set aside a serious block of time to make a significant push toward the next step of their dissertation.

The retreat is targeted toward students who:

• Have research question(s) but have not been able to complete chapters 1, 2 and 3 (the proposal); OR
• Have defended their proposal and collected data, but have not yet completed chapters 4 and/or 5.

Retreat participants will be selected and assigned to work directly with a DSC writing instructor. The ratio of advisor to students will be 1-to-4, meaning students will have a great deal of support and interaction on their project. In addition, participants will exchange papers and support each other through peer-to-peer feedback.

• Workshop Dates: Thursday July 22 - Sunday July 25, 2010
• Application Deadline: June 21, 2010
• Acceptance Notification: June 23, 2010
• Fee: $1500*
  First deposit due : 6/25/10 - $750
  Second deposit due: 7/16/10 - $750
  (*The first 8 students to register will receive a $400 scholarship and pay only $550 on each due date)

Apply early -- the first eight (8) applicants will receive a $400.00 scholarship that lowers the costs of the dissertation writing retreat to $1100.00. (This amount pays for the residential component of the retreat which is lodging, meals, and retreat logistical fees.)

CANCELED: Saturday Presentation

The presentation on the Qualifying Exam scheduled for this Saturday has been canceled due to lack of sign-ups.  It is still being offered on Thursday, May 27 at 3-4 pm in WPH 408.

Starting-up: Summer Writing Groups

Start the summer with with a renewed commitment to your research and writing!  

The writing groups are a forum available to students each semester as they continue to work on their proposal and dissertation. Students are encouraged to develop individual writing goals and schedules for the completion of their dissertation. We have had great success with the writing groups over the last year. This forum is an opportunity for students to stay engaged with the dissertation process and commit to meeting their goals for the semester. Please contact Dr. Fischer at lfischer@usc.edu if you are interested in participating in a writing group this semester.
