The USC Asian Pacific Alumni Association (APAA) 2012-2013 Scholarship application is now online.
The application deadline is February 24, 2012, at 5:00 p.m. PST. The APAA will award 45-55 scholarships of up to $3,000 each. All full-time graduate students with a 3.0 GPA who qualify to receive financial aid through the USC Office of Financial Aid are eligible.

As it enters its 108th year, Town and Gown of USC is proud to offer over 175 merit based scholarships – totaling close to $1,300,000 - to deserving incoming freshmen and current undergraduate, and graduate students. Scholarships range from $6,000 to $10,000, are awarded annually, and are for tuition only. USC graduate students who are applying for the first time, and have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5, are eligible for scholarships. All scholarship recipients must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 while attending USC as a Town and Gown Scholar.
Applicants are required to:
Be United States citizens. Permanent residents do not qualify.
Be residents of Southern California. Bakersfield is the northern most boundary.
Demonstrate academic strengths, leadership, and community involvement.
Be full-time doctoral students with 6 or more units per semester in a program. Tuition remission disqualifies the applicant.

Dear Cohort of 2011,
Happy Holidays! The following are important updates as your first semester in the Ed.D. program comes to a close:
Spring Registration
I have sent out both your registration memo and booklist for the spring 2012 semester. Please feel free to contact me if you need another copy of either document. The last day to register and settle your bill for the spring semester without a late fee is Friday, January 6th, 2012. Classes begin the week of January 9th.
Concentration Information Session
The Concentration Information Session will be on Monday, January 9th, 2012 from 4:00-6:00pm on the University Park Campus. Location TBD. At this event, faculty from all four concentrations will be discussing the concentration classes, career paths, and various other topics related to their concentrations. A student panel will also be able to answer your questions about the concentration courses. After this event, all students will be asked to confirm their concentrations or request a switch via Survey Link. Please be aware that if you decide to switch concentrations, your request must be approved by the concentration chair. The Ed.D. Office will send an e-mail update once a room has been confirmed.
Preliminary Review
Please Save Copies of Your Final Papers An important procedural component of the Ed.D. Program is the doctoral screening process called the preliminary review. As mentioned at Orientation and in the 2011-2012 USC Catalogue (page 555), all doctoral students undergo the preliminary review and all students must pass the doctoral screening prior to completing 21 units in order to continue in the program. Please save the final papers from each of your core courses with your instructor’s comments as part of the preliminary review process. If you do not receive your final paper with the instructor’s feedback you can submit a clean copy of your final paper. The preliminary review process will be conducted prior to the summer 2012 semester.
Please be aware that the university will be closed on November 24th and 25th to observe the Thanksgiving holiday. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

The USC U.S.– China Institute (USCI) funds social science research examining the U.S. – China relationship or significant trends and issues affecting that relationship. USC doctoral students in all disciplines are invited to apply for summer fieldwork grants.
This support enables USC doctoral students to a) carry out field research on a topic addressing an aspect of the multidimensional U.S. – China relationship and b) to forge ties with researchers or institutions in China or elsewhere who will be able to assist students in carrying out future dissertation research.
As a result of this field research, students should be better able to develop their dissertation prospectuses and more compelling dissertation research proposals for major funding agencies.
Students may request up to $4,000.
The grants may be used to
• visit archives, critical libraries, or other institutions;
• carry out interviews, surveys, or other fieldwork; and/or
• meet and study with research mentors in China and elsewhere
These grants are not intended for
• study in language training programs
• conference participation
• work that could be completed while in residence at USC
• equipment purchases
USCI is committed to supporting work examining a broad range of topics. Preference will be given to policy-relevant research projects. Click here to download detailed grant guidelines and the application form.

Dear Cohorts of 2003, 2006, and 2009,
Please review the following reminders and important deadlines:
1) Please don’t forget to RSVP (to me) for the December 5th Dissertation Submission Workshop by November 28th! Learn the ins and outs of preparing to defend and submit your dissertation to the Graduate School, ask your burning questions to the Financial Aid Office, and win a prize!
2) If you were hoping to apply for any of the APRISE March Study Tours, you are in luck! The APRISE (Asia Pacific Rim International Study Experience) application deadline has been extended to December 2, 2011. Please submit your Study Tour applications and Fellowship applications online on the APRISE website: http://www.uscrossier.org/blogs/abroad/study-tour-application/. Please contact Dr. Jing Li at jingli@usc.edu or Dr. Elizabeth Jordan at ejordan@usc.edu if you have any further questions!
3) The last official day of classes for Fall semester is December 14, 2011. Winter recess is from December 15, 2011 – January 8, 2012. If you haven’t scheduled your Qualifying Exam or your dissertation defense, please contact Margaret Cyrus at cyrus@usc.edu or 213-740-9323 to reserve a room in WPH. For students who need to complete their Qualifying Exam, the last day to drop EDUC 791 and add EDUC 794a for Spring 2012 is Friday, January 27, 2012.
4) Thank you to those of you who have already submitted your Permit to Enroll form(s) for Spring 2012. If you haven’t already, please send me your respective Permit to Enroll form(s) so we can get you registered for the Spring Semester by the January 6, 2012 deadline!
5) The Ed.D. Program Office will be closed on November 24 – 25th for Thanksgiving and December 26, 2011 – January 2, 2012 for Winter Recess.

Building Capacity for Military Connected Schools at the USC School of Social Work is looking for two experienced doctoral students to work in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of researchers on a variety of mixed method research and program evaluation projects.
Time commitment: 20 hours/week
Pay: Competitive; commensurate with experience
Expected start date: January 2012

Project Description Building Capacity is a four year $7.6 million Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) funded partnership. The Building Capacity Consortium is a partnership between the University of Southern California and eight military connected schools districts in San Diego and Riverside counties.

Job Responsibilities
• Conduct background research for projects; succinctly summarize large amounts of secondary research
• Foreground and implement qualitative research projects consistent with project goals and evaluation needs
• Develop protocols consistent with data collection plan (e.g. interview protocols, focus group protocols, documents, field notes, etc.)
• Oversee quantitative/qualitative data collection and analyses in collaboration with other members of the research team (primarily student workers)
• Initiate and maintain project timelines
• Proactively identify challenges and provide recommendations for how to make projects run more smoothly
• Assist with preliminary/basic quantitative analyses (as needed)

The Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowship covers graduate study tuition costs plus an $18,000 annual stipend to be allocated towards room, board and ordinary living expenses, as well as any income taxes thereon.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
1. Fellowships are available to students who are currently enrolled in and pursuing a graduate degree at a designated institution of higher learning located in the United States of America. Undergraduate students are no longer qualified candidates.
2. The program of study being pursued by the candidate may include any recognized field of study in the humanities, social sciences, ornatural sciences (including law, medicine, engineering, architecture or other formal professional training). The selection committee has a strong preference for supporting scholarly endeavors.
3. The candidate must have received a baccalaureate degree at the time the fellowship would commence and have an outstanding undergraduate record.
4. The candidate must demonstrate a need for financial assistance.
5. The candidate must be a citizen of the United States of America.
6. The candidate may be of any national descent or background.
FELLOWSHIP DETAILS
1. The amount of each Fellowship will cover actual tuition costs plus an $18,000 annual stipend to be allocated towards room, board and ordinary living expenses, as well as any income taxes thereon.
2. The recipient of a Fellowship shall be known as a Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellow.
3. Fellowships are awarded annually. Each Fellow MUST APPLY FOR A RENEWAL of his or her fellowship by March 30 of the following year in accordance with the terms in effect at the time the fellowship is awarded. Fellowships will be limited to a maximum of three years.
4. Awarded fellowships may not be deferred.
5. A Fellowship may be canceled at any time if a Fellow engages in misconduct affecting the Fund, breaches any of these rules or provides false information to the Fund either directly or indirectly.
