The USC Graduate School is pleased to announce the launch of a new program this spring semester for doctoral-level students called Academic Professional Development (APD). The program seeks to enhance students’ academic and professional skillsets and to better prepare them for future careers. The Spring 2012 APD offerings follow two formats: a Ten-Week Program Series and Individual Seminars/Panels.
Refer to the attached program flyers and application. Students must apply for the program and register for the individual sessions. Activities will take place on both the University Park Campus and Health Science Campus.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
• Learn about grant funding opportunities and how to write effective proposals to help secure fellowship funding, supplemental funds to support current research, and seed money to fund new research projects
• Persuasive Writing and Editing Strategies: Research Papers, Theses, Dissertations, Abstracts for Conferences and Publications
• Effective Oral Communication in Scholarly and Professional Environments, and How to Organize Research for Conferences, Panels, and Classroom Presentations
• Writing the Job Market Package: Cover Letter, Teaching and Research Statement, CV/Résumé • Research Resources, Library Search Strategies, and Conducting the Literature Review • Earn a Certificate of Completion (awarded by the USC Graduate School, Office of the Provost), and Become Eligible for Supplemental Research or Conference Travel Funding (awards ranging from $500 to $1000)
DUE DATES & ELIGIBILITY
For the Ten-Week Program Series (Option A & B), the due date is Tuesday, January 24, 2012 (before 12:00 p.m.). Acceptance notifications will be sent by Friday, January 27th. Activities begin January 31st and run until April 10th. For the Seminars and Panels: Tuesday, January 24, 2012 (before 12:00 p.m.). Confirmation will be sent starting on Wednesday, February 1st. Sessions begin mid-February and run through the end of March. The program is open to all USC doctoral-level students.
