Join the Graduate Students of Color Network's weekly socials!

The Graduate Students of Color Network has put together a weekly social hour targeted to bring together students of color at USC in a casual setting where they can play cards, connect and just relax with friends. It is targeted for minority students but it is open to all graduate students.

WHAT: An hour to relax, connect and kick it with other USC Graduate Students.

USC ReadersPLUS Literacy Project

Get involved in OUR neighborhood schools!

Work along with the Joint Educational Project’s USC ReadersPLUS program, mentoring K-6 students in literacy development. As a Literacy Project mentor you will be helping a child to become a strong and independent reader.

There will be pre-service training sessions:  February 22^nd, 12:00pm- 2:00pm, and February 24^th, 10:00am- 12:00pm.The training sessions will introduce various techniques and strategies for tutoring students in reading. Download Literacyprojectposter[1]2012

Fourth Annual Graduate Student Poster Symposium-February 19th, 2012 Submission Deadline

Open to all graduate and professional students, the Fourth Annual Graduate Student Poster Symposium is a unique and interdisciplinary opportunity to showcase your research to graduate students across USCs campus and to receive feedback from USC faculty. It’s the only such event of its kind and is sponsored by the Dornsife, Viterbi, Keck, Annenberg and Marshall schools and the Office of the Vice Provost.

Fellowships in the amount of $1,000 (1st place winner), $500 (2nd place winner), $300 (3rd place winner) will be awarded in EACH of the three categories to the top posters by an esteemed panel of faculty judges. The work of the winners will also be displayed in an online research showcase that may be displayed to alumni, outside funders, and potential students. The Poster Symposium is sponsored by the Dornsife, Viterbi, Keck, Annenberg and Marshall schools and the Office of the Vice Provost.

Please submit a 300-500 word abstract in one of three categories (STEM, Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities) by midnight on February 19th, 2012.

*Please note that we accept submissions of research that has previously been presented at other conferences.

 ** Marshall students may submit to their department for poster printing reimbursement

Do you have questions regarding the elements of APA style? Do you know if your references are in the proper APA style format? If you would like to learn or improve your knowledge in APA style, please come to the Doctoral Support Center Presentation on APA Style which will be presented by Ilda Jiménez y West, Ph.D. Dr. Jiménez y West will illustrate the basic elements of APA style and guide students through the process of writing a research paper in this style.

CALSA Call for Volunteers – Due on February 24, 2012

The Rossier School of Education and the Ed.D. Program Office is hosting the California Association of Latino Superintendents and Administrators (CALSA) fourth annual Conclave on Friday, March 23, 2012.

CALSA is holding this conference at a time when the goal of an effective education for Latino students—including Latino English learners (ELs) is more critical than ever to their future and to California’s social and economic health. The CALSA Conclave will focus on this crucial issue and provide participants the ability to put research into practice in their respective fields.

EDSA (the Educational Doctoral Student Assembly) is partnering with the Ed.D. Rossier Continuing Student Scholarship- Due March 1, 2012

The Scholarship Application for continuing students is now available online, and should be submitted by no later than March 1, 2012. The review of these applications will take place during the month of March, with applicant notification not later than April 1, 2012.

2012 Ed.D. Flag Bearer - Congrats, Chris McDonald!

Congratulations to Chris McDonald on representing the graduating class as the 2012 Ed.D. Flag Bearer at the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony on May 10, 2012!

Chris is a first-generation college student. Not only is he the first member in his family to enroll in a doctoral program, but Chris is graduating with a 4.0 GPA!

Chris currently serves as the Mathematics Department Chair at Mt. San Antonio College. He has dedicated his career to service as an educator in the community college system. He truly believes in the mission of the community college system and the difference that community colleges make in the lives of individuals and underserved communities. Thanks in part to Dr. Bensimon, Dr. Garcia, and Dr. Cole, Chris has developed a better understanding of his responsibilities as an agent of change. He has implemented a data-driven diversity awareness initiative in his department and is constantly initiating conversations about increasing success and retention for traditionally underrepresented students.

Chris did not attend his high school graduation in New York nor the graduation ceremonies for the Bachelors or Masters degrees at Cal Poly Pomona in part because he could not afford to fly his mother in from Jamaica. He is absolutely thrilled to make his mother and fellow Ed.D. colleagues proud as he carries the flag in May.

Congratulations to Chris on being selected as the 2012 Ed.D. Flag Bearer and making the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony very special for his mother!

I hope the month of February is treating you well! Please check your email for in-depth information regarding the reminders below.

1) Dissertation Defense Paperwork – Submit to me after you successfully defend your dissertation

Please make sure to let me know when you have scheduled your Dissertation Defense – and please make sure you take the Dissertation Defense Packet materials with you on the day of your defense and submit them to me after you acquire your committee’s signatures along with the Publications and Binding Fee ($115) receipt from the Cashier’s Office (2^nd floor of King Hall). I would be happy to review the paperwork one-on-one with you prior to your defense!

2) CALSA Call for Volunteers – Interest Forms due on February 24, 2012

Registration for the 2012 Summer semester begins on February 29, 2012. The registration process is different than previous semesters as not all students will need to register for the summer term. If you have taken EDUC 794a, are currently enrolled in EDUC 794b, and are hoping to meet the April 2 / July 2 upload deadlines, then you do not need to register for summer. If you are missing any coursework, please contact me directly for departments clearance as soon as possible!

4) 2012 – 2013 Rossier Continuing Student Scholarship Application – DUE MARCH 1, 2012

5) 2012 APRISE Study Tour and Fellowship Application – DUE MARCH 1, 2012

Would you like to travel to Hanoi and Singapore in May with Dr. Brewer and Dr. Gothold? The purpose of the study to increase students’ international exposure and provide the opportunity to contextualize educational practice and leadership from a global perspective. The fee for the May 2012 Study Tours will be $2,500 per person, plus applicable visa fees. A limited number of fellowships will be awarded based on merit as well as special circumstances. Please complete the Study Tour and Fellowship application (http://www.uscrossier.org/blogs/abroad/study-tour-application/) by March 1, 2012. 6) Dissertation Submission Workshop – RSVP by March 2, 2012

Please don’t forget to RSVP (to me) for the March 5^th Dissertation Submission Workshop from 4:00pm – 6:00pm in WPH 403! If you are hoping to defend and upload your dissertation by April 2 or July 2, you won’t want to miss out! The workshop will include presentations from the Doctoral Support Center, USC's Graduate School Thesis Editors, the Financial Aid Office, and the Ed.D. Program Office. We’ll be discussing exit loan counseling, commencement details, and so much more! You will also have the opportunity to hear from a student panel! Bring your business card to enter the raffle and win a prize!

All Doctoral Students are welcome to attend, as we support students in all phases of the program. The DSC Writing Workshops provide students the opportunity to commit to writing and have an advisor available to assist with questions regarding academic writing or the dissertation process. You can attend as an individual or join a writing group which meets regularly. Students are also encouraged to meet with their writing advisor monthly for discussion and individual updates and to schedule any review dates for drafts. Vive Peru - Summer 2012 Volunteer Opportunity

Are you interested in supporting communities in need? Are you looking for a life-changing experience that will prepare you for your future career and help your résumé stand out from the competition? Volunteer with Vive Perú this summer!

Vive Peru is a nonprofit organization pending 501 (c)(3) status dedicated to fostering understanding of Latin American and Peruvian culture and providing much-needed aid to Peruvian communities. Our past volunteers have come from ASU, U of A, Stanford, USC, Northwestern, Berkeley, and Michigan, among others. We work to promote cultural understanding and implement innovative and self-sustainable programs in the areas of health, education, social work and engineering.

It's a life-changing opportunity that challenges students to grow both personally and professionally. Working knowledge of the Spanish language is encouraged but not required.
