Cohort of 2013 October Updates

Dear Cohort of 2013:

You are almost half way through your first semester in the Ed.D. Program…hope it has been wonderful for you all! Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions as you move through the remainder of the semester!

Spring 2014 Registration

Registration for the Spring 2014 semester is right around the corner! You will be receiving registration information from me shortly—registration for all Ed.D. students opens on October 30! If you have any questions or concerns regarding registration, feel free to contact me!

Early Warning Process

As previously mentioned at the beginning of the program, core faculty will be asked to provide the Ed.D. Program Office with the names of any students who may benefit from additional resources. The early warning process will take place halfway through the semester--this process is not intended to be punitive to students. Our office wants to ensure that students have all of the resources necessary to be successful in the Ed.D. program. If you are flagged for early warning by your instructor, the Ed.D. Program Office will connect you with useful resources that will assist you in the program. Early warning is conducted to address any concerns before they could adversely impact your grades in the Ed.D. program. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding this process!

USC Home Football Game on October 10

Thursday October 10, 2013 at 7:30 PM, there will be a USC home football game. Please be advised that this game will not obstruct classes and you should plan to attend classes, as scheduled. We anticipate heavy traffic congestion as game time nears so we recommend arriving early to campus or using public transportation on that day, if possible. For those of you who are planning to commute to campus, normal parking rates ($10) will apply. Please make sure to follow any faculty instructions for class that night.

Please feel free to utilize Gmail chat/Skype to connect with me if you have any questions/concerns or even if you want to simply say hello and let me know how the program is going at any time.  I will be logged into Gmail Monday-Friday and throughout the day depending on availability.

A green dot next to my name: I am available for chat
A red dot next to my name: I am currently busy and unavailable
An orange dot next to my name: I have become "idle" or have possibly stepped away from my computer
A gray dot next to my name: I am not logged into Gmail

USC Email

Please make sure to check your USC emails regularly. All program office emails and faculty correspondence will be sent to your USC email address. For those of you who wish to link your Gmail accounts to your USC email addresses, please visit this website: http://getgoogle.usc.edu/

USCard (USC Student ID card)

Please visit http://www.usc.edu/bus-affairs/admin_serv/uscard_serv/students/ for more information regarding your USCard (USC student ID card). You can submit a picture online and pick up the ID card in the USCard office. You can also choose to take your picture there and pick up your USCard in the office. USCard services office is open Monday through Friday 9:00 AM-5:00 PM--they can be reached at (213) 740-8709. You will need your USCard to enter USC buildings after hours (evenings).

Blackboard

Please make sure to check out the Content Folder of the Orientation Blackboard site for valuable information! Additional information will be added to the Blackboard site so please continue to check the site. Blackboard can be accessed from my.usc.edu or www.usc.edu/blackboard.

CUE's Institute for Equity Effectiveness and Excellence at Hispanic Serving Institutions

Join the Center for Urban Education October 11 in Los Angeles for the first annual Institute for Equity Effectiveness and Excellence at Hispanic Serving Institutions. The two-day event is designed around the realities practitioners at current and emerging HSIs face. With over thirty four institutes from California, Texas, Washington and Arizona in attendance the event is ideal for anyone interested in the issues HSIs, both current and emerging, face. The event is local and will take place at the Omni Hotel downtown. We encourage you to consider attending the Institute, particularly if you have professional or personal interests in issues affecting the educational experiences of students at HSIs. Topics to be covered include re-designing remedial education to improve completion and strengthening the Latino-STEM pipeline, among others. Additionally, the Institute could serve as a great networking opportunity, research- or job-wise.

The Division for Early Childhood Graduate School Fellows

The Division for Early Childhood is hiring two Graduate Student Fellows to assist with the planning and organization of the group's international conference, which will be held October 15 - 18 in San Francisco. Any interested students must be available to work for 5 hours a week in West Los Angeles and be able to work a minimum of three days at the conference. Date Changes

Some important changes have been made to our calendar for upcoming DSC presentations and workshops this fall.  Please see the following link for the most up-to-date schedule.

Note: The October and November presentations on APA/Academic Writing and Understanding Empirical Articles have been moved and several presentations have been changed to online Adobe Connect sessions to accommodate our students. These presentations have been very helpful to students in the past, so please consider taking some time out of your busy schedule to work with a DSC advisor and collaborate with your own classmates and colleagues.
