Dissertation Writing Retreat - ODA - OC Campus Center Summer 2014

If you need some structured and quality time to write your dissertation chapters then apply today for the dissertation writing retreat.  ODA stands for "Operation Dissertation Acceleration" and is designed for doctoral students who need/want to set aside a serious block of time to make a significant push toward the next step of their dissertation.

The retreat is targeted toward students who:

• Have research question(s) but have not been able to complete chapters 1, 2 and 3 (the proposal); OR
• Have defended their proposal and collected data, but have not yet completed chapters 4 and/or 5.

Retreat participants will be selected and assigned to work directly with a DSC writing advisor. The ratio of advisor to students will be 1-to-4, meaning students will have a great deal of support and interaction on their project.  Applicants are accepted on a first come first serve basis.

CPED 2014 Dissertation in Practice Award

The Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED) is now accepting submissions for the 2014 outstanding Dissertation in Practice Award. This prestigious award is given to EdD graduate(s) whose Dissertation in Practice evidences their scholarly endeavors in impacting a complex problem of practice, and aligns with CPED working principles. 

All students who are interested in being considered for the Dissertation in Practice Award should discuss eligibility with his/her chair. 

Time to Write - Summer 2014

The DSC Time to Write 2014 will be in session from June to August 2014. There are Weekend Writes and Thursday Night Writes. All Doctoral students are welcome to attend as we support students in all phases of the program. Students are provided the opportunity to commit to writing and have an advisor available to assist with questions regarding academic writing or the dissertation process. Students are encouraged to develop individual writing goals and plans. You can attend as an individual or create a writing group which meets regularly. Students are encouraged to coordinate with their writing advisor for meetings and to schedule any review dates for drafts. Bring your laptop, work materials, and ear buds and go to work. USC 6th Annual Graduate Research Symposium

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: 300-word abstracts due February 17, 2014 (email to [email protected]) 

This year will be the USC Graduate Student Government’s sixth year hosting the Graduate Research Symposium.  All participants will give five-minute presentations, presented on a single PowerPoint slide. Here are the basic details:

Who: Any currently enrolled graduate student at USC.

What: A symposium presenting the top research produced by USC Graduate Students. Each student will get 5 minutes to present their research on a single power point slide (think TED talks).  The emphasis should be on the broader relevance of their findings and contribution to their field.  First prize from each field (STEM, Social Science/Humanities, and Health Sciences) is $1000.

How:

1.Submit your abstract (maximum 300 words) by 5:00pm on Monday, February 17, 2013 to

2. If your abstract is selected as a semi-finalist, you will be asked to submit a 5-minute video of your presentation and the PowerPoint slide for review.

3. Sixty finalists (20 from STEM fields, 20 from Social Science/Humanities, and 20 Health Sciences) will be chosen to present at the Graduate Research Symposium in April.

4. First prize from each field (STEM, Social Science/Humanities, and Health Sciences) is $1000. Second place receives 750, third receives $500.

AERA Dissertation Grants. AERA provides dissertation support for advanced doctoral students to undertake doctoral dissertations using data from the large-scale national or international data sets supported by the NCES, NSF, and/or other federal agencies. The selection process is competitive. AERA Dissertation Grants are awarded for one-year for an amount of up to $20,000. The next application deadline is Friday, January 24, 2014. Institute on Statistical Analysis: Causal Analysis Using International Data. The AERA Grants Program is accepting proposals to attend the Institute on Statistical Analysis: Causal Analysis Using International Data to be held in Washington, DC May 6-9, 2014. The focus of the 2014 Institute will be on inferring causality and the methodologies available to support causal inferences using data from TIMSS and PISA. Advanced doctoral students and recent doctorates are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants must have completed at least one year of statistics courses at the doctoral level and have familiarity with multiple regression methods. 2014 Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Dissertation Fellowship Award

In 2014, the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation will award six fellowships of up to $25,000 to advanced doctoral students completing dissertations that further the understanding of the educational pathways and experiences of high-achieving, low-income students.  

Applicants must have successfully completed all pre-dissertation requirements, including defense of their dissertation proposals, and be candidates for a doctoral degree at a graduate school in the United States, though they need not be U.S. citizens. Please note that the applicants' graduate study may be in a diverse range of academic disciplines (e.g., policy studies, economics, psychology, education) but their topic must be tied to the Foundation’s mission of advancing the education of exceptionally promising students with financial need.
