Open Access Week is October 22 to 28. Please join us on Friday, October 26 for a timely discussion as Charlotte Roh, Scholarly Communication Librarian at the University of San Francisco, will be speaking on scholarly communication and social justice. The title of her talk is

“Open Access isn't Perfect, but Neither is Publishing: The New Landscape of Scholarly Communication as an Opportunity for Social Justice”

 

Ms. Roh writes and speaks on the intersection of social justice and scholarly communication, dealing frankly with issues such as bias, diversity, and the subversion of traditional publishing power structures. In addition to her work in academic libraries, Ms. Roh has spent the last year as a Library Publishing Coalition Fellow working on the Ethical Framework for Library Publishing.  She has an MLIS from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

What does it take to publish before you complete a graduate program? Tools for organizing and analyzing sources? Primary sources that have already been collected? Venues for disseminating research beyond the book and journal?

Please join the Graduate School and the USC Libraries for three days of programming in support of publication from information-gathering to the final product. Countdown to Publication is aimed at graduate students, but open to all.

Workshops will be held January 31 – February 2.

In recognition of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday and Black History Month Dr. Sally Pratt, the Vice Provost for Graduate Programs, will be hosting lunches along with the Graduate Student Advocates for Diversity Outreach.  The objective of these lunches will be for the Graduate School to learn more about the experiences of underrepresented minority doctoral students at USC.
